Monash University’s School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine is committed to the prevention of disease and disability through education, innovation and research. Classes take place across the Monash campuses and the School is based 553 St Kilda Road, Melbourne. It is part of the Alfred campus, adjacent to the Alfred Hospital on Commercial Road.

SPHPM is a public health leader in Australia and internationally. The School comprises of many experts in the field of public health, producing innovative and dynamic research and projects in the areas of epidemiology, bio statistics, clinical trials, clinical registries, evidence synthesis and health social science. Continued collaborative work with the major Monash affiliated hospitals, research institutes and public health units ensures SPHPM is a key resource in producing and investigating translational research within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.

SPHPM generates a vast amount of research and is engaged in many valuable collaborations with other tertiary and medical institutions that are recognised and respected on a global scale.

The research undertaken at SPHPM focuses on the prevention of disease and disability, with a strong commitment to education, leadership and innovation. These healthcare focus areas include:
  • chronic disease prevention;
  • increasing the evidence base of healthcare and health promotion;
  • improving quality and safety of healthcare;
  • advancing health information technology;
  • improving cost-effectiveness of healthcare;
  • prolonging disability free survival amongst the elderly;
  • improving the care of the critically ill and injured;

  • Indigenous health;
  • reducing adverse health impacts of the environment and the workplace;
